The Blackthorn (Prunus Spinosa, Draighiean) is a shrub and is common in Ireland. White flowers appear in April and May before the leaves. Sloes grow in Autumn. They taste sour but birds like them. The wood is famous for Shillelagh walking sticks. It was also used for the teeth of hay rakes.
